Maternal health in the era of antiretroviral therapy (ART): A review of the literature

Jonas presented African Strategies for Health’s literature review, explaining why this topic was proposed by USAID and its three main questions: Effective interventions for reducing maternal mortality for those living with HIV; What demand side factors influence women’s initiation and adherence of ART; and What operational and health systems factors affect initiation and adherence to ART. ART was the only intervention found to directly reduce excess risk of mortality. There is insufficient evidence about effects of ART on birth outcomes and its long-term effects on women. Despite these gaps, the review acknowledged other opportunities such as Option B+ for PMTCT.
