Fawzi explained the interaction between HIV and nutrition, with HIV impairing nutrition and poor nutrition exacerbating HIV. Fawzi shared recent research from South Africa, Thailand, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe that showed a link between vitamin B and longer time to AIDS disease progression death. He discussed the effects of multivitamins on postpartum wasting, hemoglobin concentrations, disease progression, and risk of infection during breastfeeding. He closed by highlighting the importance of an integrated approach and said that we must think about this issue in terms of the discovery side as well as the translational side.
