A new study by the Guttmacher Institute and the International Institute for Population Sciences highlights the continuing problem of maternal mortality in India, the country with the highest annual number of maternal deaths in the world. Even though the proportion of women receiving delivery care increased by one-third between 1993 and 2006, half of all Indian women still give birth without the assistance of a trained professional. The study discusses some of the many obstacles standing in the way of continued progress on reducing maternal mortality.
