During the past month, I’ve been reading Half the Sky, a new book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn that features stories of women who have overcome extreme adversity—sexual violence, poverty, illness, and fistula—not only surviving, but charting a new course for themselves and their communities.

It’s a testament to the power of every individual to make a difference in the world—and at the same time, a reminder of how far we have to go to achieve equality. As we all know, one of the most telling examples is the stubbornly high rate of maternal mortality in many parts of the world. Maternal health features prominently in the book and is highlighted as one of the crucial areas needing concerted action.

Expanding on this and other central themes of Half the Sky, EngenderHealth has created a Reader’s Companion. Chapter-by-chapter, the Companion offers diverse perspectives, interviews, stories, and facts, drawing on our expertise and experience around the world. In it, you can hear the voices of those working on the front lines of global health and development, and of the women and men who are beating impossible odds and improving lives in their communities. Check it out and spread the word…
