Global Alliance for Maternal Mental Health logoEarlier this month, the Global Alliance for Maternal Mental Health launched a new website related to improving the mental health of women during pregnancy and the postnatal period. This new online platform is full of resources, including videos of women sharing their real-life stories in their own words.

The Global Alliance for Maternal Mental Health (GAMMH) comprises 13 international agencies including Foundation for Mother and Child Health, International Association of Women’s Mental Health, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics and White Ribbon Alliance, among others. These partners are working together to raise awareness about maternal mental health and its impact on the health of both women and their children.

According to GAMMH, “mental health problems in pregnancy and following childbirth are roughly twice as common in low-income countries as they are in high-income countries.  If the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are to be achieved by 2030, maternal mental health must be prioritized.”

Improving maternal mental health is one important strategy to end preventable maternal mortality and to ensure that all women and their families have the health and wellbeing to survive and thrive.
