This session started with Kumar’s work in India using Standards Based Management and Recognition to address the growing need within health facilities due to an increased usage in maternal health services. The program had many successes including the ability for hospitals to self-motivate based on the self-assessment approach and how it provided a framework for supportive supervision and infrastructural/HR improvements.

Akter’s presentation focused on Bangladesh where they used a pay-for-performance approach to achieve pre-determined performance targets with a quality assurance system to measure performance. The pay-for-performance method produced fantastic results, including increased quality of care scores especially for MNCH.

Process quality of facility-based labor and delivery care in sub-Saharan Africa: A proposed conceptual framework and measurement tool

Tripathi explained the work revolving around P-QoC, Process Quality of Care in regards to labor and delivery quality of care. Her work included finding the key dimensions of labor and delivery care, the indicators of those dimensions, and finally a scale to measure QoC given these determinants. Once finalized this tool will be used within the clinic setting by managers and key stakeholders, as well as via rapid surveys and health services research.

Too close to die: A study of the effectiveness of a referral system for emergency obstetric care using spatial analysis in Madhya Pradesh, India

Chaturvedi presented on how to make sure the effectiveness of the referral system in providing successful EmOC in one district of Madhya Pradesh province in India. Results found that the referral systems were not working as expected in the area, despite the increase of actual EmOC patients.

Rapid assessment of selected skilled birth attendants in eight Latin American and
Caribbean countries

Murdock described the traditional birth attendants in 8 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Murdock’s rapid assessment provided only select information on certain indicators, but suggested a number of ways forward including periodic testing of provider competency, update clinical guidelines, and provide better supervision for students.
