The opening ceremony provided conference goers with a wonderful welcome from many dignitaries and conference organizers. The speakers noted how important it was that the conference was held in Tanzania and how they hoped that the conference provides attendees a wealth of knowledge that they can bring back to their committees, organizations and countries. They described the importance of maternal health and how it will continue to be a necessary topic in the post-MDG agenda. Speakers also described how we can best go about long-term solutions using an equitable approach, even if countries do not have enough, in that what they do have, they need to share it in an appropriate manner. The speakers also gave a charge to conference goers by asking for better coordination in a fragmented maternal health agenda. There was also the push to make sure to do more in varied areas for maternal health but make sure that the mission is kept on-track. The Vice-President officially opened the meeting, coupled with the statement that much progress has been made in this field, yet so much more is needed in order to reach maternal health goals.
